Honouring Sefton’s Community Stars

The latest Citizens 4 Good event, held at Bootle Town Hall, brought together community members to celebrate some of Sefton’s unsung heroes. Organised by Sefton 4 Good and Sefton CVS in partnership with the Mayor of Sefton’s Office, the event shone a spotlight on individuals whose kindness, commitment, and quiet contributions have made a real difference across the borough.

The celebration served as a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion, connection, and community spirit. Councillor June Burns, Mayor of Sefton, opened the event with a warm address to attendees, setting the tone for an inspiring evening of recognition.

Sefton CVS Citizens for Good Awards at Bootle Town Hall

Highlights included two group supporting families as they navigate the often-complex Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system, a beloved therapy dog bringing comfort to local hospital patients, and a young man dedicated to improving his local parkfor everyone to enjoy. Alongside them were many others—volunteers, neighbours, and everyday champions—whose actions continue to create positive change throughout Sefton.

The following individuals were recognised for their outstanding contributions:

Lauren Ruane, Flow Fitness – for creating an essential community for new mums in the Crosby area through you pre and post-natal fitness classes. 

Joe Park, Friends of South Park – He is an indispensable part of the Friends of South Park, he is always getting stuck into sessions and discovering long lost paths in overgrown parts of the park.

One Eyed Jack Daniels (JD) and his owner Judith Hulse – Boarder collie, One Eyed Jack Daniels ( AKA JD), has been a therapy dog at Southport Hospital for more then 8 years. Together with is owner Judith, they have brought comfort, smiles, and companionship to patients.

Danny Power and Jodie Gasteretous, The Lathom Hall Club – Danny and Jodie have worked hard to preserve the historic Lathom Hall Club and have used their venue to raise money for a number of local and national charities.

Jordan Francis, Autism Initiatives – for his unwavering commitment and compassion through his long-standing work supporting autistic individuals.

Joan Bayley – for outstanding commitment to her community through her weekly voluntary work at the local community pantry and church.

Mabel Robin, Southport Macmillan Centre – Mabel is a dedicated volunteer for Southport Macmillan Centre and offers emotional support to those that navigating cancer as well as great practical support for the centre.

Mel and the Life’s For Living Volunteers – for working tirelessly, without financial gain, to help children, adults, and families with additional needs access the services, education, and emotional support they deserve. Five volunteers; Rebecca Leahey, Hannah Williams, Mel Duffy, Melissa Carrabyne, Daniel Westworth and Ian Thiis, were with Mel to receive their certificates.

Robert Charlton, the Indy – for his dedicated commitment to volunteering at the Indy Pantry, Derby Park and Another Place.

Jodie Banks, In it Together – for leading a parent-led initiative In It Together which offers vital support to families with neurodivergent children across the Sefton community.
