Volunteer Celebration Event 2025

As part of Volunteers’ Week, Sefton CVS hosted their annual Volunteer Celebration Event in partnership with Volunteer Centre Sefton and the Mayor of Sefton. The event brought together over 150 volunteers from organisations in Sefton in celebration and recognition of their invaluable contributions and amazing work across the borough.

The volunteers recognised at the event were from organisations including; Homewatch, Southport and Formby Macmillan Centre, Parkhaven and Friends of South Park, among many others. Their collective efforts span a diverse range of activities, from supporting vulnerable individuals to enhancing local green spaces.

Distinguished guests included; The Worship the Mayor of Sefton Cllr June Brown, Cllr Liz Dowd, Cllr Paulette Lappin, Colonel Martin Amlot, Patron of Sefton CVS and Angela White, Chief Executive of Sefton CVS. Their presence underscored the profound appreciation for the often-invisible work undertaken by volunteers.

“it is so important to recognise the incredible, often invisible, work that people do in our community,” said Helen Duerden of Volunteer Centre Sefton. “Volunteers’ Week is the perfect opportunity to truly shout about their dedication and the profound impact they have on so many lives.”

Special Recognition Award – Lord Street in Bloom

This past year has presented its challenges for Sefton, and the event also provided a poignant moment of recognition for the efforts of Lord Street in Bloom.

In the wake of the Southport tragedy, the volunteers of this group selflessly dedicated countless hours to tending to the flowers, teddies, bracelets, and plants left as tributes by mourners at the Atkinson. Their compassion and meticulous care in preserving these heartfelt memorials earned them a special recognition award, acknowledging the comfort they provided during a difficult time.

Volunteer of the Year – Michelle Fairclough

A highlight of the annual celebration is the presentation of the coveted Volunteer of the Year Award. This year, the accolade was proudly bestowed upon Michelle Fairclough from The Fillies Girls Football Club.

Michelle established The Fillies in 2006 and has since managed the day-to-day operations of the club, providing invaluable footballing opportunities for girls aged 4 to 16. Her dedication extends far beyond the pitch; Michelle serves as a guide, mentor, and tireless advocate for the girls and their families. She consistently seeks funding and sponsorships to ensure that football remains an option for low-income families and children from disadvantaged backgrounds, making a tangible difference in their lives.

The overwhelming love and gratitude expressed by the members and families of The Fillies GFC speak volumes about Michelle’s extraordinary impact.

Young Volunteer of the Year – Daisy Langton

The event also shone a light on the next generation of volunteers with the Young Volunteer of the Year Award, presented to individuals aged 25 and under. This year’s deserving recipient was 19-year-old Daisy Langton from Friends of South Park.

Over the past year, Daisy has demonstrated exceptional commitment, attending over 90 general volunteering sessions and often staying for more than four hours at a time. Her eagerness to learn is evident in her pursuit of various courses, achieving her First Aid at Work certificate and an introduction to composting. Her enthusiasm for “getting stuck in,” whether weeding, digging, or sorting compost, is truly inspiring. She is particularly popular with the younger children attending family sessions, who often ask, “where’s Daisy?” if she is not there.

Her dedication has led her to join the group’s committee, where she represents younger volunteers’ views and gains valuable experience in group management, significantly contributing to her employability skills.

The annual Volunteer Celebration serves as a powerful reminder of the incredible impact that volunteers have on the fabric of Sefton and their quiet dedication makes all the difference.
