During Volunteers’ Week (2nd -8th June) local residents and corporate volunteers alike got a hands-on introduction to giving back yesterday at a special ‘Volunteer Taster Session’ with the Friends of Rotten Row in Southport.
The taster session, designed to offer a glimpse into the world of volunteering, attracted a fantastic group of seven individuals. Among them were two enthusiastic volunteers from Balfour Beatty, two from engineering firm D Morgan, and one from Minster Law, all keen to utilise their company’s volunteering initiatives. They were joined by members of the public, curious to discover if volunteering was the right fit for them.

Under the guidance of the dedicated Friends of Rotten Row, the volunteers rolled up their sleeves and tackled a vital task by weeding parts of the impressive 0.7 metre herbaceous border. This beautiful stretch of Rotten Row is meticulously cared for by the friends of group, and the extra hands made a real difference in maintaining its pristine condition.
“Volunteer taster days are a great way to encourage people to give volunteering a go without any long-term commitment,” said Catrin Hughes, Volunteer Development Officer at Volunteer Centre Sefton. “We also find these days are incredibly beneficial for those looking to make the most of volunteering days offered by their workplaces. It is a great opportunity for companies to support their employees in giving back and provide invaluable assistance to our community projects.”
The session provided a practical and enjoyable experience for all involved, showcasing the impact of even a few hours of volunteered time. For the corporate volunteers, it was an opportunity to engage with the local community and contribute to a cherished green space. For the members of the public, it offered a friendly and supportive environment to explore new experiences and meet other volunteers.

The success of the taster session highlights the growing interest in flexible volunteering opportunities and the vital role that community groups like Friends of Rotten Row play in enriching local environments. As Volunteers’ Week ends for another year, events like these are a powerful reminder of the collective spirit that strengthens our communities.
